Clearing Clouds at Cameo Island

Image
When the Clouds Cleared: A Perfect Morning on Cameo Island Photography requires instinct—knowing when to press the shutter and when to wait. This October morning in Zakynthos taught me that patience often delivers the greatest rewards. Cameo Island Bridge had captured my imagination during pre-trip research, promising the perfect blend of natural beauty and human architecture that defines my fine art photography. With sunrise coming later in autumn, I enjoyed a more civilized start than summer's 4:30am wake-ups—though still early enough to arrive before anyone else. What made this morning special wasn't just the location but sharing it with my 16-year-old daughter Gracie, whose behind-the-scenes documentation came with refreshingly unfiltered teenage commentary that broke my usual contemplative silence. We arrived at Agios Sostis harbor while darkness still enveloped everything. Setting up my equipment, we weathered a brief shower—a gift that delivered those dramatic clouds so ...

Why I Photograph "Boring" Things (And Get Strange Looks)

Image
A Warm Glow On The Arches Warm summer light radiates softly through the arches of the Hospital of the Knights in Rhodes' Old Town. Much goes into an image, but the biggest factor has got to be the light - without it there is no image. I don't believe there's such a thing as bad light or even bad weather in photography. It depends on the image you're looking to create. Light can stop me in my tracks, and it has the power to transform even the most mundane into something beautiful. I can't tell you the number of strange looks I've got from people who see me shooting something so ordinary they think I've lost the plot! They walk right past while I'm standing there with my tripod set up, clearly photographing... a doorway. Or a shadow on a wall. Or in this case, just light coming through arches. Here in the palace though, it was plain as the golden daylight reflecting off the palace stone why I stopped to grab this image. The way that warm summer glow picked...

"Heaven's Harbour: The Blues of Rhodes"

Image
"Heaven's Harbor: The Blues of Rhodes"  In the gentle embrace of another Rhodes sunrise, I found myself drawn to Kolimbia's harbor, where modern vessels rest in waters that have sheltered seafarers for millennia. While the harbor itself spoke of contemporary Greece, my lens was captured by something more timeless – the Agios Nikolaos Church, standing sentinel above the morning waters. Perched like a guardian over the harbor's entrance, the church seemed to float between sea and sky in the day's first light. As the sun began its ancient dance with the horizon, it painted the scene in nature's most exquisite palette – the deep blues of door and flag echoing the Mediterranean itself, while warm golden light caressed the iconic whitewashed walls that have become synonymous with Greece's spiritual landscape. These blues of Greece – from the deepest azure of their proud flag to the celestial sweep of the morning sky – have become more than just colors in my ...

MOUSE ISLAND DAWN: CHASING LIGHT IN CORFU

Image
MOUSE ISLAND DAWN: CHASING LIGHT IN CORFU Where do ancient legends meet perfect light? For centuries, this tiny emerald isle has whispered stories to those willing to listen. Pontikonisi—Mouse Island—sits gently at the mouth of the Halkiopoulos lagoon in Corfu, frozen in mythological time. According to Homer's epic, this very island was once Odysseus's ship, transformed by Poseidon's wrath into the verdant rock we see today. The small Byzantine church of Panagia Vlacherna stands as a sentinel to this ancient tale, a testament to how mythology and faith intertwine in the Greek landscape. I had already photographed Mouse Island from the distant cliffs at dusk, but something called me closer. I wanted intimacy with this legendary place—to capture the church in its perfect morning light. But reaching this location presented its own odyssey. With my rental car already returned, I faced a choice: a lengthy road journey or what locals described as a "short beach walk"—pr...

Why This One Image Required 48 Separate Shots (And Climbing a Wall at 4am)

Image
Why This One Image Required 48 Separate Shots (And Climbing a Wall at 4am) Greek Wedding Chapel Lindos Rhodes St Pauls bay is located at the beautiful village of Lindos and It sits below the natural citadel and Acropolis of Lindos. Located in the picturesque bay is the Greek Orthodox Wedding Chapel of St Pauls located on the water's edge. This beautiful chapel and stunning location attracts weddings here from all over the world. I decided I wanted to capture the chapel and the idyllic location and set out at 4 am to get to Lindos before sunrise. It was still very dark as I arrived at Lindos and as I drove slowly down a dimly lit steep hill towards the bay two black goats frightened the life out of me as they poked their heads up out of a bin they were stood up against !...yep, I was now fully awake! I arrived at the bottom of the bay and at the chapel gates, it was every bit as beautiful as I anticipated which isn't always the case with places I research. The gates were locked ...

"A Quiet Corner In The Old Town”

Image
"A Quiet Corner In The Old Town” "In the whispered corners of ancient streets, an empty chair tells stories of pause amidst life's beautiful chaos." Steps away from bustling tourist crowds, this tranquil corner of Rhodes Old Town offered unexpected solitude. An empty chair waits for its owner—perhaps a local taking brief respite from summer's endless visitors.  📖 *Ancient Mornings: Finding Peace in Mediterranean Light* – Download Now   🔗 Link in Bio https://bit.ly/4iKX3zJ

When 37 Years of Photography Becomes Autopilot

Image
Antiquity Under The Arches I've been a photographer for most of my life, to the point where I sometimes operate on autopilot with a camera in my hand. For example, I can't always define what attracts me to capture certain images like this one from the Hospital of the Knights in Rhodes' Old Town. Greece and its antiquity obviously inspire me, but some images catch my eye that many might pass by without a second look. Something subconsciously caught my attention and I composed 5-6 frames around these ancient arches. On reflection, I think it was the shapes of the arches and the diagonal intersection of the steps that must have had a subconscious attraction. Light, however, is definitely a conscious attraction - it can transform the blandest objects into something beautiful. Here, as with many of my images, I'm shooting contre-jour (into the light), backlighting the subject. This technique was used extensively by fashion photographers and creates probably the most beautifu...

A Golden Welcome At Lindos Citadel

Image
A Golden Welcome At Lindos Citadel: Racing the Tourist Coaches I'd already spent a good few hours on the cliffs at Lindos that morning, set up well before dawn, before arriving at Lindos Citadel above the village. The entrance to the acropolis opened at 8am which was a little later than I'd have liked - I wanted good light and to avoid the coaches of tourists. The light and heat increased by what seemed every minute, but the walk up "Cardiac Hill" was beautiful. Local ladies were setting up their lace stalls under the shade of trees lining the pathway. I reached the top and took more images while waiting for the ticket office to open. The views over the cool blue Mediterranean and distant mountains hypnotized me with the clarity of light and color contrast. I dragged myself away and paid my entrance fee, imagining the horde of coaches parking up below! Unfortunately I can't pass up a wonderful image, and before getting anywhere near the path up to the acropolis, I...

Casting A Line Mandraki Harbour: When Seconds Matter

Image
Casting A Line Mandraki Harbour: When Seconds Matter Walking around Mandraki harbour in Rhodes one August morning, I found myself surrounded by unusual cloud cover. Warm air contrasted with cool, muted light as several fishermen cast their lines into Mediterranean waters. I was initially drawn to the compositional balance—the gentle harbour curve, silhouetted figures, historic backdrop. But what made me quickly reach for my tripod was the first hint of crimson peeking between clouds at the horizon. These moments require both recognition and readiness. Within seconds, I was set up to capture what I knew would be brief—that instant when rising sun broke through a narrow gap in clouds, bathing the scene in dramatic light. The resulting image is what I'm always searching for: the interplay between cool morning tones and warm dawn glow, human presence in an historic place, and that quiet quality found only in these early, unhurried hours. This is why I rise before dawn and return to the...

The Invisible Work: Capturing Timeless Moments

Image
The Invisible Work: Capturing Timeless Moments What compels a photographer to rise before the world awakens? Passion. It's the heartbeat beneath every image, the invisible thread that pulls me from warm sheets into the silent embrace of dawn. Most people wouldn't understand trudging up a rocky path, camera bag heavy on my shoulder, when the world is still draped in darkness. But for those who truly love their craft, this isn't a burden—it's a calling. Patience is passion's quiet companion. Some photographers collect images like quick snapshots. I hunt for moments. I wait for that sublime instant when light transforms stone from mere object to living memory. My camera sits ready, but the real work happens in the waiting—in breathing with the landscape, in becoming so present that the boundary between photographer and scene dissolves. After 37 years behind a lens, I've learned that technical mastery is merely the language. The true art is translation—transforming ...

Agios Sostis Port Chapel

Image
Agios Sostis Port Chapel "Where the mountains rise and the sea gently embraces the shore, life finds its balance—steady, serene, and infinitely beautiful." Photography often rewards those who linger. After capturing a perfect sunrise at Cameo Island Bridge in Zakynthos, I could have headed back for breakfast, mission accomplished. Instead, I chose to embrace the gift of another hour of that incomparable Mediterranean morning light. It was then that I discovered what had been hiding in plain sight since my pre-dawn arrival—a charming chapel carved from sandstone standing quietly beside my parking spot at Agios Sostis harbor. Sometimes the most memorable images are those we never planned to capture. This tiny sanctuary, barely large enough for my daughter Gracie and me to enter simultaneously, revealed itself in the gentle morning glow. The warm light accentuated every texture and contour of its weathered facade, creating a perfect harmony between architecture and environment t...

Cleansed by Dawn - When Street Cleaners Become Creative Partners

Image
Cleansed by Dawn - When Street Cleaners Become Creative Partners Picture this: I'd captured three perfect shots on a warm Lindos morning, then watched a street cleaner wash away my entire composition. Most photographers would curse their luck. I saw opportunity. Those damp cobblestones suddenly created mirror-like reflections, transforming ordinary whitewashed walls into something magical. The warm dawn light dancing across wet stone toward Saint George Pahimahiotis Chapel? Pure poetry that wouldn't have existed without that unexpected "interruption." This is why I return to the same Greek villages year after year - you never know when serendipity will gift you the shot you didn't plan for. Sometimes the best fine art photography emerges from embracing the unplanned moments that make each Mediterranean dawn unique. When an image calls to me, I simply cannot walk away. That's the difference between taking pictures and creating art that captures Greece's tim...

Lost in Time: The Serenity of Mon Repos Palace

Image
Lost in Time: The Serenity of Mon Repos Palace Mon Repos Palace stands as Corfu's quiet guardian of memory, its neoclassical elegance almost hidden among Mediterranean pines and cypress trees. Unlike Greece's more celebrated ruins, this royal retreat offers a different kind of historical resonance—one where royal footsteps still seem to echo across polished floors. As a fine art photographer drawn to places where time feels suspended, I found myself captivated by Mon Repos at first light. The morning sun illuminated its elegant façade with a warm glow that seemed to restore the palace to its former glory, if only for a fleeting moment. There's something profoundly moving about photographing a place where Prince Philip drew his first breath, where European royalty once sought respite from court life. My lens captured not just architectural details but the sense of serene dignity that permeates these grounds—a quality increasingly rare in our hurried world. What fascinates me...

"Morning Chorus at Lindos: A Tranquil Dawn Over Greece"

Image
Dawn's Echoes: A Symphony Over Lindos Some places call to you again and again. Lindos is one of those sacred spaces where time seems to dance between ancient and present - its white-washed buildings cascading down to the sea like frozen music, crowned by the eternal acropolis above. This vista demanded reverence. To capture its full grandeur, I merged twelve separate images, each frame preserving intimate details from the gentle harbor to the distant mountains that have watched over this village for millennia. In the pre-dawn stillness, I drove through darkened roads seeking the perfect vantage point. As first light touched the acropolis, Lindos awakened with timeless sounds - donkeys announcing the day as they have for centuries, their calls echoing off ancient stones. The scene unfolded like a painting in motion, golden dawn light blessing each whitewashed wall and weathered stone. Here, in one frame, lies the eternal soul of Greece - azure waters embracing the harbor, village li...

When the Clouds Cleared: Racing the Clock at Cameo Island

Image
When the Clouds Cleared: Racing the Clock at Cameo Island I arrived at Cameo Island Bridge in Zakynthos well before sunrise in October. My 16-year-old daughter Gracie came along to document behind the scenes, complete with refreshingly unfiltered teenage commentary that broke my usual quiet concentration. We got there in darkness and weathered a brief shower - which turned out to be a gift. Those dramatic clouds are pretty rare in Mediterranean photography, so I wasn't complaining. As first light revealed the scene, I positioned my composition to capture the bridge alongside harbor lights in cool pre-dawn blues. The image was already strong, but experience told me to wait. I sensed something better was coming. When the sun finally breached the horizon, it transformed everything - clouds ignited with color, the bridge glowed with warmth, water reflected the whole show. This is what 37 years of photography teaches you: recognizing when good is about to become great, and having the pa...

The Cat Who Waits for Sunrise: Kardamena's Hidden Morning Magic

Image
The Cat Who Waits for Sunrise: Kardamena's Hidden Morning Magic My love affair with Greece began on that cruise ship as a five-year-old in 1972. Though my memories are faint, my father's passion for Greek history and mythology sparked something enduring in me that still guides my camera lens today, some 37 years into my photographic journey. This particular dawn in Kardamena felt like coming full circle. While my family slept in our hotel room—a ritual they've grown accustomed to over decades of trips—I slipped out in darkness, drawn to the beach by that familiar anticipation that has pulled me from comfortable beds across countless Greek islands. The soft pre-dawn light was already working its magic, painting Kos in those ethereal hues that first captured my heart as a 19-year-old, when I embarked on that formative tour of Greek antiquity sites with my father's professional camera. The Turkish mountains rose beyond the horizon—a view that never loses its power to humbl...

TEXTURED TONES OVER AGIOS NIKOLAOS

Image
Textured Tones Over Agios Nikolaos "Step Into The Golden Hour Where Ancient History Meets Timeless Beauty" Morning light reveals stories that darkness keeps hidden—a truth I've learned intimately during four decades of chasing Mediterranean dawns with my camera. As the strengthening Kos sun cast its warm glow across the horizon that particular morning, I found myself witnessing one of those magnificent transformations that remind me why I fell in love with Greek light as a young man with my father's camera. The rising illumination began revealing the intricate textures of Kastri island, highlighting every weathered detail of the charming Agios Nikolaos chapel and the ancient cliffs that have stood sentinel here for millennia. What captivated me wasn't just the beauty—it was the beautiful contrast developing before my eyes. While the island basked in warm, textured illumination that reminded me of those golden mornings in the Somerset Levels where I first honed my...

Morning, Light Enters The Palace

Image
Morning, Light Enters The Palace There's something sacred about dawn that calls to my photographer's soul. It pulls me from bed hours before tourists flood the streets of Rhodes Old Town. On this particular morning, I wasn't alone. With promises of breakfast as currency, I convinced my sleepy family to join my pre-dawn mission to capture the Palace of the Grand Masters in that magical Mediterranean light. We arrived as the historic site opened at 8 am—early enough to experience the ancient stones warming under the first gentle rays. While most visitors were still enjoying their hotel breakfasts, we had this magnificent medieval fortress almost entirely to ourselves. As a fine art photographer, these are the moments I live for. The way light streams through arched windows, painting golden patterns across weathered stone floors. How shadows retreat slowly into corners as the sun climbs higher. The absolute stillness that allows you to hear the whispers of history in these hal...

Perched On The Chapel At Dawn

The Edge of Darkness (And Why I Chase It)

Image
The Edge of Darkness (And Why I Chase It) Nigh Falls Nisyros I spent a week on Kos watching light change across the sea toward Nisyros island. One of those mesmerizing views you never tire of watching. After dinner one evening, I set up my camera and watched the sun fade across crystal-clear sky, with only the occasional plane breaking the smooth tones. There was wonderful anticipation to complement the silence as this beautiful scene slowly unfolded into darkness. This is what I call "The Edge of Darkness" - that magical sliver of the day where time feels like it pauses between day and night. Most people miss it entirely, rushing through their evening routines. But for those willing to sit present in silence with the landscape, it reveals secrets. I've captured many images during these precious moments across the Greek islands. Each one different, each one teaching me something new about patience, about presence, about finding magic in the transition between what was and...

Lunch Time Lindos

Image
Lunch Time Lindos If you’ve followed my work for any length of time, you might think I’m a little obsessed with Greek cats. The truth? I’ve always been more of a dog person. But when I’m out shooting in Greece, these cats have a way of sneaking into my photographs — and into my heart. They’re curious, they’re cheeky, and more often than not, they decide to follow me around while I’m working in the early hours. It’s hard not to warm to them. This particular image wasn’t taken in the morning, though. It was an Easter afternoon in Lindos. We were visiting Rhodes, showing friends the island, and decided to slip away for a bit of exploring on our own. That’s when I stumbled upon this scene. A local lady had just finished feeding a cluster of cats, and they were gathered together in a little sunlit corner. The light was perfect — warm April sunshine pouring over whitewashed walls — and the cats, content after their lunch, made for a wonderfully unplanned composition. What I love about moment...
