Morning light reveals stories that darkness keeps hidden—a truth I've learned intimately during four decades of chasing Mediterranean dawns with my camera.

As the strengthening Kos sun cast its warm glow across the horizon that particular morning, I found myself witnessing one of those magnificent transformations that remind me why I fell in love with Greek light as a young man with my father's camera.

The rising illumination began revealing the intricate textures of Kastri island, highlighting every weathered detail of the charming Agios Nikolaos chapel and the ancient cliffs that have stood sentinel here for millennia.

What captivated me wasn't just the beauty—it was the beautiful contrast developing before my eyes. While the island basked in warm, textured illumination that reminded me of those golden mornings in the Somerset Levels where I first honed my craft, the Aegean remained in cool blue tones, smooth as silk. This interplay between rugged and serene, between ancient stone and timeless water, embodies everything that draws me back to Greece again and again.

This was my second capture of Kastri that morning, quite different from my dawn image. Where my earlier photograph captured the mysterious quality of first light—that ethereal moment I've been chasing since my teenage years—this one revealed the island's true character with greater clarity yet equal beauty.

These patient observations are what separate my work from casual holiday photography. After 37 years of rising before the sun, I've learned that landscapes perform private shows for those willing to witness their transformation from darkness to day. It's why my family has grown accustomed to my pre-dawn departures, why I've made this beautiful obsession my life's work.
