When the Clouds Cleared: Racing the Clock at Cameo Island

I arrived at Cameo Island Bridge in Zakynthos well before sunrise in October. My 16-year-old daughter Gracie came along to document behind the scenes, complete with refreshingly unfiltered teenage commentary that broke my usual quiet concentration.

We got there in darkness and weathered a brief shower - which turned out to be a gift. Those dramatic clouds are pretty rare in Mediterranean photography, so I wasn't complaining.

As first light revealed the scene, I positioned my composition to capture the bridge alongside harbor lights in cool pre-dawn blues. The image was already strong, but experience told me to wait.

I sensed something better was coming. When the sun finally breached the horizon, it transformed everything - clouds ignited with color, the bridge glowed with warmth, water reflected the whole show.

This is what 37 years of photography teaches you: recognizing when good is about to become great, and having the patience to wait for it.

Later that day, our family witnessed a massive sea turtle surface near the harbor. Nice confirmation we were in the right place.

Learning when to wait - that's what takes years to master.
