Monolithos: The Shot I Haven't Captured Yet (But Will)

Image
Silent Bell Monolithos Jaw-dropping was my overwhelming emotion when I first visited Monolithos. This fairly remote location took a while to drive through the mountains, but upon arrival, that was forgotten. We parked close to a small taverna below the hill and walked up the picturesque path to the top. The site was once a castle built by the Knights of Saint John - now two 15th-century chapels remain: St. Panteleimon and St. George. The day I first visited, the site was packed with balanced stone towers. I'm not sure if they had significance, but they were gone on my two other visits - one of those mysterious Greek phenomena you encounter. The panoramic views from here are simply stunning, encompassing mountains and coastline for miles. Monolithos is a location that needs a drone to really capture just how incredible it is. My plan at some point is to find accommodation nearby and head out on one of my morning drone missions to capture this place properly. This is why following my...

"Serenity Meets Antiquity: A Reflective Morning at Agios Stefanos"

Image
Idyllic Moments At Agios Stefanos Some places hold their secrets until dawn. Agios Stefanos is one of them - a sacred convergence of ancient faith and natural beauty that had called to me since before the pandemic delayed our meeting. Here, time stands still in the most beautiful way. The small island of Kastri rises from gentle waters, crowned by the chapel of Agios Nicolaos, while the Byzantine basilica of St. Stefan keeps its age-old vigil on the shore. Two sacred spaces, separated by sea but united in their timeless serenity. The morning unfolded like a meditation. For ninety minutes, I lost myself in capturing the interplay of dawn light across water and stone. Each frame seemed to reveal another layer of beauty, making it impossible to leave until the sun had fully claimed the day. Idyllic Moments At Agios Stefanos Canvas Mocks-6 Later, my family joined me for a simple picnic beneath the ancient walls, our laughter mingling with the sound of waves against weathered stone. Agios Sostis Port Chapel

Image
Agios Sostis Port Chapel "Where the mountains rise and the sea gently embraces the shore, life finds its balance—steady, serene, and infinitely beautiful." Photography often rewards those who linger. After capturing a perfect sunrise at Cameo Island Bridge in Zakynthos, I could have headed back for breakfast, mission accomplished. Instead, I chose to embrace the gift of another hour of that incomparable Mediterranean morning light. It was then that I discovered what had been hiding in plain sight since my pre-dawn arrival—a charming chapel carved from sandstone standing quietly beside my parking spot at Agios Sostis harbor. Sometimes the most memorable images are those we never planned to capture. This tiny sanctuary, barely large enough for my daughter Gracie and me to enter simultaneously, revealed itself in the gentle morning glow. The warm light accentuated every texture and contour of its weathered facade, creating a perfect harmony between architecture and environment t...

A Peaceful Dawn at St. Paul’s Gate

Image
Dawn's Revelation: St Paul's Gate, Rhodes In the gentle hush before sunrise, St Paul's Gate reveals its centuries-old grandeur differently. Ancient stones glow under ornate lamps, while the first whispers of dawn paint the sky in cool, ethereal hues - a perfect balance of warmth and morning mystery. These pre-dawn moments belong to a select few: diligent street sweepers, late-night revelers finding their way home, and, of course, the ever-present Greek cats who've appointed themselves guardians of these medieval walls. Their quiet presence adds to the timeless atmosphere that only these early hours can create. While waiting for the perfect light to capture my envisioned composition, I explored the surrounding passages. Each corner held promises of new perspectives, as if the old town itself was slowly sharing its secrets in the growing light. There's something truly magical about witnessing Rhodes awaken. The gradual shift of colors across the horizon, the slow symp...

Byzantine Basilica On The Beach

Image
Byzantine Dawn: St. Stefan's Basilica, Kos Dawn light was just beginning to spill over the Turkish peninsula when I discovered an unexpected scene at the Byzantine basilica of St. Stefan. Ancient stones met modern life as a lone figure moved through his morning exercises among ruins that have witnessed centuries of sunrise rituals. There's something magical about these unspoiled historic sites in Greece. No tickets, no queues - just pure connection with antiquity. The basilica stands proudly on the beach, a testament to time's gentle touch, freely offering its beauty to anyone drawn to its weathered walls. As morning light bathed the ancient stones in golden warmth, I lost myself in capturing the interplay of light and shadow across time-worn textures. The workout warrior and I shared this sacred space in our own ways - he finding strength among the ruins, while I sought to preserve their timeless serenity. THE LAZY CATS OF LINDOS: WHEN THE PHOTOGRAPHER BECOMES THE CURIOUS ONE

Image
THE LAZY CATS OF LINDOS: WHEN THE PHOTOGRAPHER BECOMES THE CURIOUS ONE For someone who usually has cats interrupting my dawn photoshoots in Greece, the tables were turned on this sunny Easter afternoon in Lindos. This time, I was the inquisitive one disturbing their peaceful siesta! While exploring the enchanting back streets of Lindos with my wife, we wandered down one of those picture-perfect narrow alleys that make this ancient town so special. That's when I spotted these two feline friends - likely relatives - perfectly content in their afternoon sunbathing ritual. There's something magical about the way Greek island cats have life figured out. They find the sunniest spots, the most comfortable perches, and simply exist in absolute contentment. As photographers, we're always searching for that perfect moment of light and composition, but these cats? They instinctively know where to position themselves for maximum comfort and beauty. In Greece, it's not a dog's l...

A Quiet Corner In The Old Town

Image
A Quiet Corner In The Old Town I captured this corner of the old town one evening while wandering with my family. While my wife and children entered yet another shop, I decided to explore what was down a side street. I came to this small square and noticed a small empty chair. Remarkably tranquil considering it was just a stone's throw from the heaving streets of people enjoying shops and restaurants. I'm not entirely sure why I was drawn to it, but I felt compelled to capture a few frames. It felt like a wonderful place some hard-working person uses to take a break from their hectic long summer days serving tourists. Not every photograph needs to be about grand vistas or dramatic light. Sometimes it's just a quiet moment that catches your eye for reasons you can't quite explain. PERSISTENCE AND PATIENCE: RETURNING FOR THE PERFECT SHOT

Image
PERSISTENCE AND PATIENCE: RETURNING FOR THE PERFECT SHOT Some images refuse to leave your mind until you've captured them exactly as you envisioned. That was the case with this magnificent medieval archway in Rhodes Old Town. My first attempt a year ago left me unsatisfied - the composition was there, but the light wasn't quite right. I knew I'd never be content until I returned for a second chance. That's the reality of professional photography that few people see - the willingness to return again and again until you achieve perfection. This time, I arrived well before dawn, setting up in darkness. While it was slightly too early for the optimal light, this gave me precious time to explore different angles and refine my composition while the ancient stones stood in silence. As I waited for the perfect dawn light, I exchanged brief greetings with a few late-night revelers making their way back to their accommodations - a reminder that these historic passages have witnes...

Clearing Clouds at Cameo Island

Image
When the Clouds Cleared: A Perfect Morning on Cameo Island Photography requires instinct—knowing when to press the shutter and when to wait. This October morning in Zakynthos taught me that patience often delivers the greatest rewards. Cameo Island Bridge had captured my imagination during pre-trip research, promising the perfect blend of natural beauty and human architecture that defines my fine art photography. With sunrise coming later in autumn, I enjoyed a more civilized start than summer's 4:30am wake-ups—though still early enough to arrive before anyone else. What made this morning special wasn't just the location but sharing it with my 16-year-old daughter Gracie, whose behind-the-scenes documentation came with refreshingly unfiltered teenage commentary that broke my usual contemplative silence. We arrived at Agios Sostis harbor while darkness still enveloped everything. Setting up my equipment, we weathered a brief shower—a gift that delivered those dramatic clouds so ...

MOUSE ISLAND DAWN: CHASING LIGHT IN CORFU

Image
Chasing Odysseus at Dawn (And Nearly Swimming With My Camera) Where do ancient legends meet perfect light? At Mouse Island in Corfu, where Homer claims that Odysseus's ship was transformed by Poseidon's wrath into the emerald rock we see today. I'd already shot this mythological place from distant cliffs at dusk, but something called me closer. I wanted intimacy with this legendary location - to capture Panagia Vlacherna church in perfect morning light. With my rental car returned, I faced a choice: lengthy road journey or what locals called a "short beach walk" - provided the tide allowed passage. I certainly didn't fancy an impromptu swim while carrying camera gear and tripod! Fortune smiled. Tide and timing aligned perfectly as I reached the causeway just as rising sun began burning away morning mist from distant mountains. The scene unfolded like a painting coming to life - golden light gradually revealing the Byzantine church against misty peaks. In momen...

Why I Photograph "Boring" Things (And Get Strange Looks)

Image
A Warm Glow On The Arches Warm summer light radiates softly through the arches of the Hospital of the Knights in Rhodes' Old Town. Much goes into an image, but the biggest factor has got to be the light - without it there is no image. I don't believe there's such a thing as bad light or even bad weather in photography. It depends on the image you're looking to create. Light can stop me in my tracks, and it has the power to transform even the most mundane into something beautiful. I can't tell you the number of strange looks I've got from people who see me shooting something so ordinary they think I've lost the plot! They walk right past while I'm standing there with my tripod set up, clearly photographing... a doorway. Or a shadow on a wall. Or in this case, just light coming through arches. Here in the palace though, it was plain as the golden daylight reflecting off the palace stone why I stopped to grab this image. The way that warm summer glow picked...

When 37 Years of Photography Becomes Autopilot

Image
Antiquity Under The Arches I've been a photographer for most of my life, to the point where I sometimes operate on autopilot with a camera in my hand. For example, I can't always define what attracts me to capture certain images like this one from the Hospital of the Knights in Rhodes' Old Town. Greece and its antiquity obviously inspire me, but some images catch my eye that many might pass by without a second look. Something subconsciously caught my attention and I composed 5-6 frames around these ancient arches. On reflection, I think it was the shapes of the arches and the diagonal intersection of the steps that must have had a subconscious attraction. Light, however, is definitely a conscious attraction - it can transform the blandest objects into something beautiful. Here, as with many of my images, I'm shooting contre-jour (into the light), backlighting the subject. This technique was used extensively by fashion photographers and creates probably the most beautifu...

TEXTURED TONES OVER AGIOS NIKOLAOS

Image
TEXTURED TONES OVER AGIOS NIKOLAOS Morning light reveals stories that darkness keeps hidden. As the strengthening sun cast its warm glow across the horizon that special morning in Kos, I witnessed a magnificent transformation. The rising light began to carefully illuminate the textures of Kastri island, highlighting every detail of the charming Agios Nikolaos chapel and the rugged cliffs rising behind it. What captivated me most was the beautiful contrast developing before my eyes. While the island basked in warm, textured illumination, the sea remained in cool blue tones—smooth and almost textureless. This interplay created a visual harmony that speaks to the duality so often found in Mediterranean landscapes—the rugged against the serene, the ancient against the timeless. This was my second capture of Kastri that morning, quite different from my dawn image. Where the earlier photograph captured the mysterious quality of first light, this one revealed the island's character with g...

"Heaven's Harbour: The Blues of Rhodes"

Image
"Heaven's Harbor: The Blues of Rhodes"  In the gentle embrace of another Rhodes sunrise, I found myself drawn to Kolimbia's harbor, where modern vessels rest in waters that have sheltered seafarers for millennia. While the harbor itself spoke of contemporary Greece, my lens was captured by something more timeless – the Agios Nikolaos Church, standing sentinel above the morning waters. Perched like a guardian over the harbor's entrance, the church seemed to float between sea and sky in the day's first light. As the sun began its ancient dance with the horizon, it painted the scene in nature's most exquisite palette – the deep blues of door and flag echoing the Mediterranean itself, while warm golden light caressed the iconic whitewashed walls that have become synonymous with Greece's spiritual landscape. These blues of Greece – from the deepest azure of their proud flag to the celestial sweep of the morning sky – have become more than just colors in my ...

A Golden Welcome At Lindos Citadel

Image
A Golden Welcome At Lindos Citadel: Racing the Tourist Coaches I'd already spent a good few hours on the cliffs at Lindos that morning, set up well before dawn, before arriving at Lindos Citadel above the village. The entrance to the acropolis opened at 8am which was a little later than I'd have liked - I wanted good light and to avoid the coaches of tourists. The light and heat increased by what seemed every minute, but the walk up "Cardiac Hill" was beautiful. Local ladies were setting up their lace stalls under the shade of trees lining the pathway. I reached the top and took more images while waiting for the ticket office to open. The views over the cool blue Mediterranean and distant mountains hypnotized me with the clarity of light and color contrast. I dragged myself away and paid my entrance fee, imagining the horde of coaches parking up below! Unfortunately I can't pass up a wonderful image, and before getting anywhere near the path up to the acropolis, I...

Casting A Line Mandraki Harbour: When Seconds Matter

Image
Casting A Line Mandraki Harbour: When Seconds Matter Walking around Mandraki harbour in Rhodes one August morning, I found myself surrounded by unusual cloud cover. Warm air contrasted with cool, muted light as several fishermen cast their lines into Mediterranean waters. I was initially drawn to the compositional balance—the gentle harbour curve, silhouetted figures, historic backdrop. But what made me quickly reach for my tripod was the first hint of crimson peeking between clouds at the horizon. These moments require both recognition and readiness. Within seconds, I was set up to capture what I knew would be brief—that instant when rising sun broke through a narrow gap in clouds, bathing the scene in dramatic light. The resulting image is what I'm always searching for: the interplay between cool morning tones and warm dawn glow, human presence in an historic place, and that quiet quality found only in these early, unhurried hours. This is why I rise before dawn and return to the...

Lost in Time: The Serenity of Mon Repos Palace

Image
Lost in Time: The Serenity of Mon Repos Palace Mon Repos Palace stands as Corfu's quiet guardian of memory, its neoclassical elegance almost hidden among Mediterranean pines and cypress trees. Unlike Greece's more celebrated ruins, this royal retreat offers a different kind of historical resonance—one where royal footsteps still seem to echo across polished floors. As a fine art photographer drawn to places where time feels suspended, I found myself captivated by Mon Repos at first light. The morning sun illuminated its elegant façade with a warm glow that seemed to restore the palace to its former glory, if only for a fleeting moment. There's something profoundly moving about photographing a place where Prince Philip drew his first breath, where European royalty once sought respite from court life. My lens captured not just architectural details but the sense of serene dignity that permeates these grounds—a quality increasingly rare in our hurried world. What fascinates me...

When the Clouds Cleared: Racing the Clock at Cameo Island

Image
When the Clouds Cleared: Racing the Clock at Cameo Island I arrived at Cameo Island Bridge in Zakynthos well before sunrise in October. My 16-year-old daughter Gracie came along to document behind the scenes, complete with refreshingly unfiltered teenage commentary that broke my usual quiet concentration. We got there in darkness and weathered a brief shower - which turned out to be a gift. Those dramatic clouds are pretty rare in Mediterranean photography, so I wasn't complaining. As first light revealed the scene, I positioned my composition to capture the bridge alongside harbor lights in cool pre-dawn blues. The image was already strong, but experience told me to wait. I sensed something better was coming. When the sun finally breached the horizon, it transformed everything - clouds ignited with color, the bridge glowed with warmth, water reflected the whole show. This is what 37 years of photography teaches you: recognizing when good is about to become great, and having the pa...

The Cat Who Waits for Sunrise: Kardamena's Hidden Morning Magic

Image
The Cat Who Waits for Sunrise: Kardamena's Hidden Morning Magic My love affair with Greece began on that cruise ship as a five-year-old in 1972. Though my memories are faint, my father's passion for Greek history and mythology sparked something enduring in me that still guides my camera lens today, some 37 years into my photographic journey. This particular dawn in Kardamena felt like coming full circle. While my family slept in our hotel room—a ritual they've grown accustomed to over decades of trips—I slipped out in darkness, drawn to the beach by that familiar anticipation that has pulled me from comfortable beds across countless Greek islands. The soft pre-dawn light was already working its magic, painting Kos in those ethereal hues that first captured my heart as a 19-year-old, when I embarked on that formative tour of Greek antiquity sites with my father's professional camera. The Turkish mountains rose beyond the horizon—a view that never loses its power to humbl...

MOUSE ISLAND DAWN: CHASING LIGHT IN CORFU

MOUSE ISLAND DAWN: CHASING LIGHT IN CORFU Where do ancient legends meet perfect light? For centuries, this tiny emerald isle has whispered stories to those willing to listen. Pontikonisi—Mouse Island—sits gently at the mouth of the Halkiopoulos lagoon in Corfu, frozen in mythological time. According to Homer's epic, this very island was once Odysseus's ship, transformed by Poseidon's wrath into the verdant rock we see today. The small Byzantine church of Panagia Vlacherna stands as a sentinel to this ancient tale, a testament to how mythology and faith intertwine in the Greek landscape. I had already photographed Mouse Island from the distant cliffs at dusk, but something called me closer. I wanted intimacy with this legendary place—to capture the church in its perfect morning light. But reaching this location presented its own odyssey.
