There's something deeply satisfying about the unplanned discoveries that follow my pre-dawn shoots. After capturing my intended subject earlier that morning, I found myself wandering Rhodes Old Town with no particular destination—just me, my camera, and that familiar posse of Greek cats who seem drawn to the sound of my footsteps on ancient cobblestones.

This is when my photography becomes pure joy. Unlike those carefully planned 4:30am shoots where every angle is considered in advance, these wandering sessions are about following instinct and staying open to whatever the morning light might reveal.

I'd walked this particular cobbled street countless times over my decades of visiting Rhodes, and the Suleymaniye Mosque had always been there—beautiful, yes, but somehow just part of the familiar landscape. But this morning was different. After 40 years behind the lens, I've learned there's no such thing as bad light, only light that either serves your vision or doesn't.

This morning, it served magnificently.

The golden hour was working its magic, bathing the mosque in an ethereal glow that seemed to lift it from the ordinary into something transcendent. The textured cobblestones leading gently upward toward the entrance caught the light like a river of gold, each stone individually highlighted yet part of a greater whole.

These are the moments that can keep me in a state of euphoria for days—when familiar places reveal hidden beauty, when that Somerset boy who fell in love with Greece through his father's stories finds himself still discovering new facets of this endless land.

Creating my art from these discoveries fuels my return trips to Greece. It's become my beautiful addiction—the need to get purposefully lost, to let curiosity guide my steps, to remain forever open to the unexpected gift of perfect light revealing something extraordinary in the everyday.
