The Two-Year Wait for This Perfect Greek Morning

The Two-Year Wait for This Perfect Greek Morning

Beauty Upon Beauty at the Byzantine Basilica

Have you ever experienced a morning so perfect it felt like a gift?

After two years of postponed dreams—thanks to Covid—I finally found myself standing on the beach at Agios Stefanos in Kos before dawn. The anticipation had been building since my original plans were derailed, but as the saying goes, some things are worth the wait.

I'd risen hours before sunrise to capture Kastri Island in that magical first light. But as the sun climbed higher, painting the sky in warm hues, my attention was drawn to another treasure—the Byzantine Basilica ruins scattered along this pristine stretch of beach.

The morning light was extraordinary. So crisp and clear you could almost reach out and touch it. Every texture came alive—the weathered stones of the ancient basilica, the gnarled olive trees, the distant mountains of the Turkish peninsula rising across the water.

What struck me most was how the photographs became almost secondary to the pure experience of being there, watching the world wake up in layers of golden light. The camera simply documented what I was already absorbing.

Standing among these 5th-century ruins, I felt connected to countless others who'd witnessed similar dawns from this very spot—Byzantine pilgrims, medieval travelers, perhaps even ancient Greeks who understood that some places are just special.

This is why I fell in love with photography in the first place. It's not about technical perfection—it's about bearing witness to moments of beauty that exist whether or not anyone is there to capture them.

Sometimes the best photographs are simply by-products of amazing mornings.

What location are you waiting to get back to?
