The Cat Who Waits for Sunrise: Kardamena's Hidden Morning Magic

The Cat Who Waits for Sunrise: Kardamena's Hidden Morning Magic
My love affair with Greece began on that cruise ship as a five-year-old in 1972. Though my memories are faint, my father's passion for Greek history and mythology sparked something enduring in me that still guides my camera lens today, some 37 years into my photographic journey.
This particular dawn in Kardamena felt like coming full circle. While my family slept in our hotel room—a ritual they've grown accustomed to over decades of trips—I slipped out in darkness, drawn to the beach by that familiar anticipation that has pulled me from comfortable beds across countless Greek islands.
The soft pre-dawn light was already working its magic, painting Kos in those ethereal hues that first captured my heart as a 19-year-old, when I embarked on that formative tour of Greek antiquity sites with my father's professional camera. The Turkish mountains rose beyond the horizon—a view that never loses its power to humble me.
I wasn't entirely alone. On a solitary sunbed sat a Greek cat (my frequent companions on these early excursions), perched regally as though awaiting the sun's arrival with the same reverence I felt. Something in its patient gaze reminded me of my own journey—how I've learned that photography isn't about capturing what you see, but about witnessing what reveals itself when you simply wait.

As the colors intensified—soft pinks bleeding into fiery oranges and gentle purples—I worked with the practiced rhythm developed through decades behind the lens. This contre-jour lighting, the backlit scene I've always been drawn to since my early Photographics days, transformed the ordinary into something ethereal.
These moments represent everything I've dedicated my career to preserving. While commercial work has allowed me to photograph for global brands, my heart's true passion remains here—in these quiet interludes when timeless beauty unfolds in tranquil solitude, when the Somerset boy who once dreamed of Greece finds himself standing at its shore, camera in hand.
In mere hours, this tranquil scene would transform into the bustling beach that tourists know—but through my photography, I preserve these fleeting moments of magic. After 37 years with camera in hand, I've learned that Greece's true soul reveals itself in these quiet interludes between night and day, offering a meditative beauty that rewards only those willing to rise before the world awakens.
