Diving Into Dawn: Elli Beach, Rhodes

Even at 5 AM, Rhodes was already embracing the warmth of a Mediterranean summer day. The thermometer read 27 degrees as I quietly loaded my gear, drawn by the promise of dawn at the historic Elli Beach diving tower.

Standing sentinel against the pearling sky, the Trampoline - a legacy of Italian occupation - rises 20 feet above gentle waters. For decades, this tower has witnessed countless leaps of faith, each diver adding their moment to its storied history.

Dawn light began its daily transformation, painting the scene in subtle shifts of color. A few scattered clouds gifted us their presence, nature's perfect complement to the tower's stark silhouette. My daughter Gracie shared these precious moments with me, both of us lost in the unfolding beauty.

Our peaceful vigil was charmingly interrupted when a young Italian swimmer, perhaps inspired by his ancestors who built this very tower, christened the morning with a naked dawn swim. Some traditions, it seems, transcend generations.
